The Today Show First Aired on This Date January 14th 1952
The popular morning show has been going strong for 58 years.
The first show aired at 7:00 AM Eastern Standard time and lasted for 2 hours.
The original Today show was hosted by, Dave Garroway. The news was read by Jim Fleming, and the sports were done by Jack Lescoulie.
The host spends a nice chuck of the show walking around and showing the news room and introducing some of the people on the show. I had to giggle when he touched an electric typewriter thinking it was an amazing machine.
Live news was brought in via telephone from places like London and Frankford. Though we may find the technology of the show elementary by todays standards the show actually had the top equipment of its time. They even had live feed using a few small televisions in the studio. When they went to the live feed the camera man would just zoom in on the television screen. Top news ran across the bottom of the screen much as it does today.
The Today Show has obviously come a long way in all this time but the original show was obviously a trend setting show for its time and helped to make morning television what it is today.
If you would like to watch the first Today Show you can see it in its entirety here:
It is very interesting to hear the news stories of that time. One of the biggest stories was inflammable sweaters.
