Martin Heinrich, Darren White Debate Pulls No Punches

Democratic 1st Congressional District candidate Martin Heinrich and Republican candidate Darren White faced off tonight on the local television channel. They participated in a live debate on the issues of the office in a very heated debate.

It began with the issue of the economy. White vowed to not raise taxes if elected. Heinrich was not going to tolerate that so simply. He blasted White with accusations of plans to maintain the current administration. He went on to say that this was all a lot of fast talk. This was just the beginning of the debate. Furiously, they debated over every issue imaginable. The economy was the most discussed issue, as it's a hot one in the news these days. Having set the tone for the debate, they continued.

Heinrich said Congress needs to get back to the fiscal discipline of the '90s. White disagreed with this. He believes that the policies are the best thing for the country. The reason the country is at a high unemployment rate is because the people who own businesses can't compete with the overseas market. He asked who do we think works in those jobs. The two candidates butted heads on that issue.

Along the attacks on the current administration's fiscal policy, White accused Heinrich of misusing funds while in city council. Heinrich accused White of using drug seizure funds to buy personal property. It got really ugly at that point. I began to feel as though neither candidate has my vote. I thought they were both hitting below the belt. Not good at all in my book.

White appealed for the expansion of the children's health care issue. It seems they both agreed to a degree on that. At least something is certain. Well, done there. It seems at least the children are of importance to both candidates.

Then it got ugly again, as White, who is also the Bernallilo County sheriff, was accused of spending $5,000 for the Bernallio County sheriff's department security bill when President Bush came to New Mexico to support a fund raiser for White's campaign. Henrich demanded White repay the money. Yikes, I thought. This is just nasty. I've seen the television commercials. These two are ready to duke it out in the Duke City.

Still, White behaved as any good officer of the law would when confronted. He stuck to the facts. I thought he did a really good job in the debate. It just amazed me to watch these two going at this debate. I felt like I was watching a boxing match. A punch from Heinrich, then an upper cut to the jaw on White. Ding, ding, ding.

Seriously, it was actually a good debate for the two, as the issues were addressed. Nobody was getting away with anything here. They both went to the mat here. Heinrich was put on the spot with a demand for a release of information regarding special interest groups that Heinrich has been associated with. Heinrich was also accused of instigating a smear campaign against White's behavior as the Bernallilo County Sheriff.

Heinrich appeared at that point to be only defending himself and attempting to maintain his stance as the truth of his behavior against and officer of the law was not only mentioned, but made to sound as if there would be something coming later on that matter. Thank-you very much. I couldn't help but laugh at this point. I really lost rack at one point there as these two went at it. Who was who again? Oh yeah, that's right. It was that good.

Whew. After the debate I sat back and looked over the notes. It was intense and brilliant as each candidate took out the facts and let nothing slip. I felt as though perhaps this was a good debate after all. I hate to take sides here, but I really liked White the best. Forget who was what party. He kicked Heinrich's bottom.

So Democratic congressional district candidates duked it out in the Duke City live and it turned out that one person won my vote. I think that White was the best at character and stance. Heinrich appeared too weak to me. I guess in the end a good strong person would be in charge. Isn't that what a leader is?
