Tips for Living with Relatives
If you have a relative moving in with you, or if you are an adult who will be moving in with grandparents or an aunt and uncle here are some tips to make it a better experience.
1. Decide and Be Clear of Expected Expenses
Before moving in, you discuss how much rent, if you will be paying rent, will be. Also discuss if you will be splitting up the utility costs, grocery bills, etc. If you have are moving in with a relative, expect to have to pay something even if they say not to worry about it. If you are letting someone move in with you, be honest about what you expect them to pay for. It isn't good to say that they won't have to worry about paying anything. It never works and both sides end up being angry. Be honest with yourself and your relative, another person is an added cost on everything, if you can't handle the extra cost, let them know in advance.
I moved in with my grandparents because I was going to serve a year in AmeriCorps. We never discussed any of the above. I have repeatedly tried to offer to pay for the added expenses, but have been repeatedly declined. This wouldn't be so bad, except that I have to listen to complaints about the utility bill being so high. If you have a relative living with you, and you bills go up, don't complain about them unless you are willing to ask them for help. If you aren't willing to take the money, don't say anything. It does nothing but add a sense of guilt to the person staying with you. The exception is if there was an agreement in place when the person moved in.
2. House Rules
You have the right to make reasonable rules for you house, but there are reasonable rules and unreasonable rules. If you wouldn't, or won't, follow the rule, it is unacceptable to ask the person who is moving in to follow it. Remember, this is an adult living with you and not a child, although if it is a grandchild or a niece or nephew, this may be hard to remember.
Reasonable rules maybe something like: turning off the lights in a room when you are done there, having to be home by a reasonable time (such as midnight), or helping out with household chores. It's okay to request that your relative not have people over if you don't want others in your house, but don't get upset if they are always somewhere else.
Don't be unreasonable over little things. Meals shouldn't have to be mandatory, especially if separate groceries are being purchased. If there are any problems, talk about them. You can't expect someone to follow a rule if you cannot give a reason as to why you have it.
3. Helping Out Your Relative
If you have a relative that is moving in with you, you probably want to help them out. It's okay to help out. They will probably appreciate it. There are some things that you probably shouldn't do without consulting them first.
For example, when I moved down with my grandparents, I sold my car before hand. I had enough to buy a clunker, I was only planning on staying with them for a year. My plan was to try to sell the car after the year and take the money with me when I moved back home. My grandparents knew that I would need a car so they decided to do me a favor. They bought me a car, a car that came with monthly payments. Now I know, what's the problem with that? The problem was that I don't make enough to take on monthly insurance payments plus a car payment, and still pay my bills. This has caused a huge problem for me. My grandfather still makes the payments on the car, but he constantly reminds me that it is, his car. And he makes me feel horrible for not being able to make the payments myself. So here is the warning: don't help out unless you are willing to take on the added expense or if you do help out, make sure its not something that could potentially be an added expense. Remember, discuss you're helping out first.
If a relative is helping you out, and it's reasonable, let them. If you need something, and they are willing to provide it, let them. Unless you know it will turn out with expecting something in return, and are unreasonable about it. It's okay to say 'no' if you feel uncomfortable, but make sure you do it nicely, and be reasonable when explaining why.
4. Spend Time Together
Having a relative live with you can be a great situation. If you are normally doing things alone, it may be fun to have someone to do it with. You may learn a new skill, or get to experience something that you haven't before. You don't have to have scheduled time together, although if you want to it's okay. Maybe make dinner together, or if you are living with a grandmother who knits, ask her to teach you. I understand that sometimes it's hard to do this, but try it. It may make living together more enjoyable.
The transition from living on your own, or with your parents, to living with a relative that may not know you well can be tough. But the above could help in making things go more smoothly. If it's not working out, you need to say so, the other person may see the same problem. And remember, it's not forever.
