Fairly OddParents: Fairly OddBaby

This is a review of the Fairly OddParents special, "Fairly OddBaby."

When Timmy comes home the next day, he asks if his new godbrother or godsister has been born. No, not yet, he's told. But he also learns that in FairyWorld, it is the male fairies, not the female fairies, that give birth to fairy babies. The audience sees Cosmo go through morning sickness, weird cravings, wild mood swings, and other things that a human woman goes through during pregnancy. This is all tackled in a humorous manner, as is expected with a show like the Fairly OddParents.

Timmy is surprised one day when he finishes taking a shower and sees a group of fairies waiting for him in the bathroom. As the fairy godchild, it's hits responsibility to host a baby shower... in his bathroom. During the baby shower, Timmy becomes so frustrated with Cosmo that he wishes that Cosmo would get lost. Panic ensues, because Jorgen is trying to keep the news of the fairy baby quiet. A fairy baby hasn't perfected its magic yet, so its magic is very unpredictable... and if the baby falls into the wrong hands (such as the anti-fairies or the pixies), they could use the baby's power to take over the world.

Unfortunately, during the search for Cosmo, word accidentally gets to the anti-fairies and the pixies about the forthcoming baby, and they both plot to capture the baby. Timmy and Wanda find Cosmo, but it's time to go to the hospital for the birth of the fairy baby. The rest of the special deals with trying to keep the baby from the hands of anyone except Wanda, Cosmo, and Timmy. Another running theme is not having time to find out what gender the baby is. Hijinks ensue, and the gender and name of the baby are revealed at the end of the special.

Overall, I thought the special was rather enjoyable. My husband found ourselves laughing quite a bit, especially while Cosmo was going through his pregnancy. I guess after you've gone through similar things yourself, you can find it easy to laugh and feel relieved that it's not you going through it this time.

But, while I think the baby idea is cute, and worked rather well, I find myself wondering how well the concept of the baby will work in the long run. During the course of the special, we find that when the baby does certain things (laugh, cry, burp, etc.), that a particular event happens. If I were writing for the series, I think it would be hard to try to make sure you incorporate those cause and effect relationships into the scripts.

Many times, the addition of a baby to a series signals that the writers are running out of ideas to write about using the already existing elements. I hope, for the Fairly OddParents, that this ends up not being the case. I really hope the addition of the new baby ends up adding a whole new layer to the series, instead of being a useful addition for the short term (such as Baby Dil or Kimi in the Rugrats).
