Teenage Boys Behavior - Fearless or Fearful?

Teenage boys act out in differnt ways. What causes some to rebel and others to behave like young gentlemen? How should a parent handle each of these types of boys?

It may be a combination of the two. Teenage boys are growing and maturing physically and mentally. Back in junior high they were usually shorter than their female friends and still had relatively high, squeaky voices. As teenagers in high school, the physical changes are dramatic. Some teenage boys grow two inches or more during their summer break. Voices grow deeper and facial hair develops as male hormones kick in, consuming the victim. Some boys can't keep up with their physical changes and walk around awkwardly and clumsily and develop a fear of the unknown. They wonder what is happenning to their bodies. They may feel that they are looking older, so now they will have to start acting older. Looking older means more responsibilities.

Some boys mature mentally and emotionally at the same rate as they do physically. These boys are usually well-mannered and behave responsibly. They respect their parents and know what is expected of them. Their upbringing has a lot to do with it as well as the circle of friends they keep. These teenage boys are somewhere in between fearless and fearful and they know how to balance the two. They take responsibility seriously and yet they know how to have fun and still be a kid. They are young gentlemen and their parents are very fortunate to have such a well-balanced teenager.

Other boys and their parents, however, are not so fortunate. Teenage boys may embrace this new found look of having facial hair and a deeper voice and expect others, including their parents, to succumb to this new found image. These are the boys who think they know it all. They feel like society and their parents owe them their freedom, but are keeping them tied down. They may be physically taller than their mom or dad and want to be treated as equals to them. They crank up the music, wear the latest fashions, flirt with the girls, don't seem to feel the need to complete school assignments and rebel against their parents when they are told what to do. This behavior is a reflection of their upbringing in some instances, their living situations, if they live in a dysfunctional family, for example. In most instances, however, it is a result of the friends they keep and outside influences that trigger bad behavior.

The best way to deal with the fearful or the fearless boy teenager is to work with him and try to understand him. He is trying to find his individualism, sometimes at the expense and frustration of his parents. The female teenager may have all these same attributes, but the male teenager seems to have the same feelings ten fold. They want to be treated as an adult. They want to do things their way. They don't want to hang out with the family anymore. They would rather hang out with their friends. It all revolves around the choices they are starting to make on their own, and the consequences or lack of consequences that they face based on those choices.

How do parents handle these teenage boys who they feel are rebelling against them? Scold them? Take away their iPods? Take away their driving privileges? Yes and no. The best way to deal with the teenage boy is through mutual communication. If he won't do his homework, find out why. "I don't feel like it", is not a valid reason. Find the underlying real reason and you'll get to the root of the problem. It may be that he was absent the day they taught that lesson and now he is behind. He may be too afraid to admit that he doesn't know how to do it and so he is not going to turn it in. The issue then needs to be resolved so that it doesn't escalate into a more serious issue of low self-esteem. Work with him, hire a tutor, get him involved in an after school homework group and so forth.

On the other hand, if he purposely is not doing his homework because he feels he is above homework, or homework is for geeks, then this is a different issue. Rules may need to be put into place to get him to do his homework. Consequences will follow if he doesn't do his homework up to and including taking away his favorite things or preventing him from driving or going out with his friends. This way he learns that the choices he makes will have an affect on the consequences he will face. The outcome, whether good or bad, will be by his own doing and not something that is forced upon him. He may rebel at first, but he will learn that he has to be accountable for his actions.

Through it all, remain patient with your teenager. Think back on the time when you were a teenager. It's not easy these days with all the additional temptations that are available to teens, especially with respect to boy teenagers. Communicate, set rules, enforce those rules, uphold consequences, and remain consistent and strong. Try not to yell or raise your voice, but do communicate with your son. Ask tons of questions and know his business. However, give him space to grow and become responsible. Reinforce positive values and comment on his positive behavior as much or more than you do with his negative behavior. Hug him, love him, and most importantly tell him that you love him. Whether he is fearful or fearless, he is your son, make the right choices as his parent and both of you will survive the teenage years.
