Christian Step Parenting Books

If you are a step parent, or will be one soon, here are some helpful books for you.

Christian Step Parenting Book #1: You're Not My Mom! Confessions of a Formerly "Wicked" Stepmother

This book was actually written together by a Christian step mother, Kali Schneiders, and her step daughter, Elizabeth Schneiders. I guess you can say their relationship does have a happy ending, but it has had it difficulties. It is definitely a book you can't put down. It offers encouragement and hope to step mothers who are struggling with a relationship with their step children. In Kali's personal situation, Elizabeth's mother had died a few years before they met. Therefore, this book doesn't discuss the challenges of co-parenting with a child's biological mother, and how divorce affects children. However, it is still a great resource for Christian (and non-Christian) step parents. You can find this book online at amazon.com, or try you local Christian book store.

Christian Step Parenting Book #2: The Smart Step Mom: Practical Steps to Help You Thrive

This is another outstanding book for step parents. It discusses multiple issues that come with step parenting - everything from handling holidays to being a positive influence to your step children. It also discusses some of the the problems that come with being torn between loyalty to a biological mother and being respectful to you. It is a must read if you are a stepmother, or will be one someday. It was written by Ron Deal and Laura Petheridge.

Christian Step Parenting Book #3: The Smart Step Family

An additional resource for step mothers and fathers is The Smart Step Family, also written by Ron Deal. Mr. Deal is a marriage and family therapist with lots of experience working with blended families. He is a well known speaker and considered an expert in step parenting and second marriages. It discusses putting your marriage as a priority, common pitfalls to step families, successful stories of step families and much more.

Christian Step Parenting Book #4: 7 Steps to Bonding With Your Step Child

While this book is not a Christian based book, it still offers great advice to step mothers and step fathers. It is highly recommended and offers practical tips towards having a positive relationship with your step child. It discusses how step parents should reach out to their step children, but not too much, too little, or too deliberately. The author, Suzen J. Ziegahn, is a clinical psychologist with years of experience helping step families. She has two step children herself.

These are just four helpful books for step parents. Step parenting is full of ups and downs, trials and more. These books can help you provide your best to your step children. Take it one day at a time, be optimistic, and have a positive attitude.
