Parenting Advice from Celebrities

Including: Angelina Jolie, Katie Holmes, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor, Helena Christensen and Gisele Bundchen.

Here, I'll provide you with up-to-date information and quotes on parenting from Angelina Jolie, Katie Holmes, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Ewan McGregor, Helena Christensen and Gisele Bundchen.

1. Angelina Jolie

Jolie and husband Brad Pitt have been in the news with their children ever since they adopted. Still working in the movie industry, Jolie has been more recently coming out publicly regarding her children and home-life.

For Jolie's latest movie project Salt, she spoke out once more about her children, this time focusing on her daughter Shiloh's fashion:

"I would never be the kind of parent to force somebody to be something they are not. I think that is just bad parenting... Children should be allowed to express themselves in whatever way they wish without anybody judging them because it is an important part of their growth." (US Magazine)

Shiloh, who is four years old, is one of six children of the Pitt/Jolie clan.

2. Gisele Bundchen

Gisele Bundchen is a popular supermodel who stunned the press when she made a statement about breastfeeding:

"Some people here (US) think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?' I think there should be a worldwide law that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months." (Daily Mail UK)

About eight months ago, Gisele gave birth to her son Benjamin (with father Tom Brady,) and she performed the birth naturally, drug-free, in her home. She also meditated and performed kung-fu throughout the birthing process.

3. Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise have been in the tabloids for years now, and while there are tons of photos of Holmes and daughter Suri, it isn't that often that the actress speaks out about parenting and her daughter in specific.

According to U Interview's website, Holmes recently commented on her daughter's education:

"We home school Suri- she has a teacher who is with her every day. We like the one-on-one education. I'm happy that my daughter is strong-willed and determined. You really have to go with what the child is wanting."

Still, much of what Holmes reveals in interviews is so vague that nothing is revealed at all, and she still speaks of her husband like a foreign alien.

4. Helena Christenson

Model Helena Christenson took a surprisingly mild stand on parenting compared to the rest of the celebrities on this list. Here she discusses her experiences with her son Mingus:

"I don't know how to give advice. When you have a child, you learn something new every day and I couldn't give any precise rules because there aren't any. Every child is different. You're different. I worried a lot when I had Mingus; the responsibility is so heavy if you think about it. If you think too much about it, it drives you crazy, so just let it happen. All [kids] really want is love and routine and a good night's sleep and delicious food. He certainly complains if there's not enough garlic in the food." (Babble)

Mingus is ten years old, and the child of Christenson and ex-husband Norman Reedus. When asked if she has any specific limitations regarding her son's needs, Helena replied, "I'm not a strict parent; I don't have a lot of rules. Mingus hasn't challenged me in that way - he hasn't demanded something that I would find totally ridiculous. I haven't deprived him, like you can't watch television or play videogames, because kids usually overdo [those things] for a bit but then they get over it because it's not enough stimulation anyway. He wants to be out in nature all the time."

5. Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin is the one celebrity on this list that perhaps should not be giving parenting advice. He made headlines and TV gossip shows everywhere when a phone call he made to his daughter Ireland and wife Kim Basinger was recorded, with him calling his daughter "a rude, thoughtless little pig" and someone who doesn't have "the brains or decency of a human being."

Although he has apologized in public for making these remarks, one still would not expect him to be writing a book on parenting. Here is a quote from Baldwin on this ironic career choice:

"It will be ironic for some people, but I'm going to write a parenting book. We're at, not a crisis, but an awful place right now in terms of parenting. People are raising their children with the belief that we need to be friends with our children. Kids have too much power and call too many of the shots, telling their parents what they will and won't do."

Perhaps this was what the media didn't cover in terms of Baldwin and his eleven-year-old daughter's relationship. That is, they never revealed what exactly she did to gain her father's wrath. Still, I can't imagine what an eleven-year-old girl would do to piss her father off that much, unless of course, Baldwin really does have a drinking problem.

On Deceiver.com, Baldwin also says that he blames the economy's downfall for the downfall of good parenting:

"People come home, walk up the driveway, put the key in the door, and they can't do another hard job. Parenting your children effectively is a tough job."

6. Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor, while having a successful career, isn't one to be in the tabloids, especially regarding family and children. However, McGregor did state how he feels about the importance of being in the moment with your children, and giving them your undivided attention:

"Pay attention: I recognize it can be boring to play with young children - to tell a story over and over again, let's say - but the secret is being there. If you've made a decision to play with your children, then play with them. Don't be looking through papers on your desk or sneaking off to the computer. Turn off your BlackBerry. Lose yourself in their world. Even if you do it for a short time, it will mean a lot to you and to them." (Men's Health)

McGregor has three kids (all girls, ages 13, 8 and 8,) and at 38 years of age and lots of experience (beyond acting) behind him, perhaps he is one actor worth listening to.

"In any challenging scenario, the calmer you remain, the clearer you can think and the faster you can figure your way out of the problem... You can't be ruled by fear -- not by other people's, and certainly not by your own... If I can pass along one message to my children it's that I want them to see there's so much out there if you're up for the adventure."

7. Hugh Jackman

Lastly we have Hugh Jackman, who also has had a successful career but manages to stay out of the tabloids.

Here is a quote from People on how to keep your kids fit and get a good night sleep yourself:

"First of all, you gotta run [the kids] around before the bath. Play a game of hide and seek or wrestle or muck around. Then they're exhausted. Then we all fall asleep on the bed!"

Jackman has two kids, Ava age 3 and Oscar age 8.
