Xbox 360 Parental Controls Guide

The Xbox 360 has plenty of great games. Unfortunately, a majority of them are mature-rated titles that you don't want your kids playing. This guide will help you set the parental controls for your Xbox 360 video game system.

First Steps

From the My Xbox tab, scroll right until you see System Settings. Press A to enter and then scroll down to Family Settings. Press A again to bring up to two options for parental controls: Console Controls and Xbox LIVE Controls

Console Controls

This is the general area to set restrictions. You have several parental control options:

Game Ratings

You can block video games based on the ESRB rating. For example if you set the restriction to T, your children can only play games rated T or below.

Video Ratings

The video ratings work the same way. Movie restrictions are based on the MPAA ratings while TV restrictions are based on the FCC. You can also choose to allow or block Explicit and/or Unrated Videos.

Xbox Live Access

You can choose whether or not your child can connect to the Xbox Live online service for the Xbox 360.

Xbox Live Membership Creation

This will give you the power to either block or allow your child the ability to create an Xbox Live membership.

Restricted Content

You can choose whether to show or hide content from restricted games, videos, etc.

Family Timer

This will allow you to set the limit on how much usage the Xbox 360 gets. You can either set daily or weekly limits in hourly increments.

Set Pass Code

Finally, you can set a pass code so that your children wouldn't be able to easily change the settings. In addition, you can use the code to override the settings in the future.

Xbox Live Controls

This portion deals exclusively with the Xbox Live online service for the Xbox 360. It only applies if your child as their own separate account from yours.

Online Gameplay

You can block or allow online gameplay on the Xbox 360 for your child. If they also have an Xbox Live account on the original Xbox, you can also set the same restrictions in this section as well under the Original Xbox Online Games option.

Privacy and Friends

This section deals with communication over Xbox Live. For the New Online Friends option, you can set the restriction to Approval Not Require or Require Approval. Every other option (Voice and Text Video, Profile Sharing, Profile Viewing, Online Status and Friends List) has the same restriction settings: Everyone, Friends Only or Blocked.

Content

The last section under Xbox Live lets you set restriction on content delivered over Xbox Live. You can set Member Content (also known as user-created content) to Allow, Friends Only or Blocked. For Downloadable Content, you can either allow or block.
