Parenting Tips: Preventing Summer Learning Loss

Here you will find 5 parenting tips that will help prevent summer learning loss.

There is proven research that kids do have summer learning loss, especially if they are not engaging in activities that keep the mind and body fresh and working. However, it is not too late to help kids be ready for that first day of school even if the preparations begin in August.

Many parents ask me what they can do to make sure their child does not lose all the knowledge in the summer that they gained over the school year, I always give parenting tips that may seem simple and easy, but they really are valuable and worth the time and effort.

Read

It is one of the first and more important things a parent can do over the summer with their child, read, read and read more. Trips to the library are a great way to motivate and bring excitement into summer reading; most libraries have summer reading programs with incentives and fun activities-many library summer reading programs go right up to the start of school.

Take field trips

Go to museums, botanical gardens, zoos or any place in your community where kids can see and learn about new things; kids love field trips and learn the best when they have hands on experiences. Taking fields trips can also be done a budget; when my daughters were young-we were on a very limited budget and I always tried to go to the museums on free days and find places in my area that were free. A little researching can go a long way and it is amazing all the free resources and activities available if you look for them.

Learn a new skill or activity

Summer is a great time for kids to learn new skills and activities, try to find something that they would have never thought they would be interested in before. Signing up for a new sport is great to do in the summer, also art classes, music classes, acting classes or any type of new activity or skill is a great way to keep the mind and body alert and going.

Play board games

Playing board games is an excellent way for kids to practice their thinking, reasoning and best of all, practice their communication skills. I believe there is something to be said of the importance of playing board games with family and/or friends. Many libraries will even let their patrons check out board games for free or garage sales are a super place to find board games at a low cost.

Volunteer

Summer is the perfect time for kids to volunteer and experience what it means to give back to the community. My daughters both volunteered at our local animal shelter in the summer when they were young, the experiences and knowledge they gained while volunteering over the summer were priceless and I believe helped to make them the wonderful adults they are today.
