Memes are cultural tidbits that circulate in society and across the internet. Being an internet-loving teen, memes are often a source for amusement for me. Ones concerning dances are especially interesting because they create involvement between the meme itself and the people acting on it. They are the new Macarena. For example, whenever I go to anime conventions, the music of meme dances is played. Group dances like these create a sense of unity and fun. Here are a few I have happened upon over the course of the past few years.
This song is sung in a foreign language, and became popular around 2005. When I went to a nerd camp, they played this at a dance. Everyone instantly cheered and started dancing to it. This song mainly reached popularity because an overweight man lipsinced it on Youtube and danced to it. The dance only involves throwing your arms up in air repeatedly, so people can easily replicate it.
Hare Hare Yukai
This dancing meme is moreso known in anime circles rather than the general public. It originated from the popular anime of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The moves can be rather complicated and quick, and the timing is hard to get right. For this reason, most do not actually know how to perform the dancing meme. Usually animations are made to dance it instead. If people do take out the trouble, they usually dance it in performance competitions at anime conventions.
Beyonce's "Single Ladies" aka "Put a Ring on it"
This song and dance has spawned several spoofs. That this meme exists is to be expected considering Beyonce's popularity, the catchiness of the music, and the distinctive dance. One of the most notable parodies is a Barack Obama impersonator, found here:
This adorable meme involves an anime character spinning around a vegetable called a leek. Like Hare Hare Yukai, this dance is well-known in anime circles. However, it is easy to perform and create videos to. Many people like to make videos of their favorite characters dancing the Leekspin, such as Pikachu from Pokemon. Sometimes they do not use leeks, but other props or veggies.
Some other dancing memes include Caramelldansen, The Hamster Dance, and the Caipirinha Dance. Many times dancing memes originate from anime, Nico Nico Douga videos, or Youtube videos.
