Basic Concepts of Computer Memory and the Binary Number System

Computers today have all sorts of memory. They advertise gigabytes of general memory, video memory, cache memory, and optical memory.
This article presents an easy-to-learn concept of memory and how it works.
We'll use small little light bulbs to illustrate our concept. If we wanted to store numbers using light bulbs, we would need ten light bulbs to store a single number between zero and nine. If the light bulbs are mounted in a single row, then we could assign a number to each light bulb. Therefore, if we wanted to store the number four, we would turn on the light bulb assigned number four and turn off all the other light bulbs. Although we have succeeded in using light bulbs as a form of memory, it would be impractical to have ten million light bulbs to represent any number from 0 to 1,000,000.
Therefore, our numbering system does not easily lend itself to a light bulb-based memory. Our number system consists of ten digits: 0 thru 9. We call it a base ten numbering system. The base ten numbering system is known as a decimal numbering system.
The Binary Numbering System
The light bulb has two states: ON and OFF. If we assign a zero to the OFF state and a one to the ON state, we have a two-digit numbering system: 0 thru 1. Another words. We have a base two numbering system. The base two numbering system is known as a binary numbering system.
Before we continue the discussion of our memory system, we need to examine the base two numbering system. In the base two numbering system, the digits 3 thru 9 do not exist. Creating a conversion table for the digits 0 and 1 is easy.
The base two digit 0 is equal to the base ten digit 0. Likewise, the base two digit 1 is equal to the base ten digit 1. The base ten digit 2 has to equal the base two number 10 because there is no digit 2 in the base two numbering system. Likewise, the base ten digit 3 equals the base two number 11.
When we count from zero to nine in the base two numbering system, we get
0000, 0001, 0010, 0011, 0100, 0101, 0110, 0111, 1000, 1001 representing base ten numbers
0 , 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9
To make sense of this, extract the first ten numbers (from the decimal system) that only contain 0's and 1's.

Now compare the decimal numbers that contain only 0's and 1's to the binary numbers listed above. They are identical. Counting in the binary number system is the same as counting in the decimal numbering system while skipping the numbers 2 thru 9.
So let's use four light bulbs to represent the decimal numbers 0 thru 10. A light bulb that is ON represents a binary 1. A light bulb that is OFF represents a binary 0. In the following discussion, the letter X will represent a light bulb that is ON and the dash line - will represent the light bulb that is OFF. The indications of the states of the respective light bulbs will be in parentheses to make it easier to read.

In a computer, every number is converted to it's equivalent binary number before being stored. The amount of memory in your computer is measured in bytes. A byte can be viewed as an 8 digit binary storage location. So the decimal number 0 would be stored as (- - - - - - - -.)
Computer Memory
Computer memory is known as RAM. RAM is an acronym for Random Access Memory. The term random access means you can read any part of memory at any time. Of course, RAM does not consist of light bulbs. Even with the binary numbering system, it would take too many light bulbs to represent a large number. Computer memory stores electrical charges in specific locations. If a location has a charge, it is read as a binary 1. If the location does not have a charge, it is read as a binary 0. Every letter, symbol, and punctuation mark is assigned a binary number and stored in memory. When the power is turned off, the electrical charges in RAM dissipate. Hence, all information is lost. This type of memory is known as volatile memory.
Binary digits are stored on your hard drive as microscopic magnetic spots. For example, the absence of a magnetism in a spot may represent a binary 0. The existence of magnetism may represent a binary 1. Information on your hard drive is not lost when power is turned off. Hence, your hard drive is known as nonvolatile memory.
Prefixes define the magnitude of memory.
Giga means a billion. A gigabyte is a billion bytes.
Mega means a million. A megabyte is a million bytes.
Kilo means a thousand. A Kilobyte is a thousand bytes.
The computer has several types of memory. The modern computer has 2 to 4 gigabytes of regular memory. Regular memory is used for general storage of data. Cache memory is faster than regular memory and is used for information and data that is needed often. Video memory is very fast and is used for data that is displayed on the monitor. Video memory is sequential access memory. This means that you must access each byte of memory in order from the start of memory to the end of memory.
Another type of memory is Read Only Memory or ROM. As the name implies, this memory can not be written to. The data is burned into this memory using special equipment. The Basic Input Output System known as BIOS was stored in ROM in some computers.
The last type of memory that this article will explain is optical memory. The CD ROM uses reflection of light as a method of storage. When the CD is read, the light patterns are converted into binary digits.
