Christmas Gift Ideas for Elderly People
What do you give an elderly parent or grandparent who has everything? Check out these Christmas gift ideas.
Collectibles and Memorabilia
One thing those who work or interact with elderly persons know is that one of their favorite passtimes is sharing cherished memories about their childhood, courtships, family get-togethers, old movies and music, and more. Use these stories to your advantage! Maybe, you frequently visit a retailer who offers such items as collectibles, movie and sports memorabilia, hard-to-find music, replicas of old vehicles, and more. From my own experiences, I have found that the elderly really connect with things that create a feeling of nastalgia, and they really enjoy having something that reminds them of important life events.
Pictures With a Unique Twist
We all know that our parents and grandparents love pictures, and they display them proudly on their walls, shelves, and in their wallets. However, in cases where our loved ones live in a nursing home, assisted living home, or other small space, finding places to show off their treasures can be difficult. With just a little time, knowledge, and a digital picture frame, you can make sure they see their children and grandchildren any time without worrying about space. Simply obtain copies of their most cherished photos and with a computer, scan them, edit them, and download to a memory card or other device used with a digital picture frame. If using copyrighted portraits, remember to get permission from the photographer before copying. Now, when the digital frame is running, persons can see the pictures, one at a time, as they continually cycle. For those whose families aren't able to visit often or for those who love pictures, photos presented in a digital picture frame would be a welcomed Christmas gift.
Gifts for Differently Abled Persons
As persons age, they start to lose their sight, hearing, and the ability to move with ease. Finding presents for these family members is easier than one might think. For those who love books but can't see to read, audio books can be purchased from a number of places, and finding topic specific books on cassette or CD is not a problem. For those who aren't able to hear very well but love to listen to music or TV, a good pair of noise-cancelling earphones with volume controls is perfect, and due to advances in technology, even some televisions have earphone jacks. Too, for seniors who have trouble getting around but want to still interact with others or keep their minds active, crossword puzzles, jig saw puzzles, scrapbooking supplies, board games, and art supplies are wonderful. By participating in activities that allow older persons to create things or challenge others when playing cards, bingo, and other games, they feel as though they are still important, useful, and active members of their communities or healthcare facilities where they reside.
Finding a nice gift for an elderly family member does not have to be a real chore. By simply knowing a little about our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other aging loved ones, we can select gifts that not only help them to relive precious memories but allow us to add a personal touch. For Christmas this year, purchase or put together gifts that will become treasured possessions.
